Choosing Paint Brushes

by Boston Decorator in Painting

An important part of having a good paint application is to use the correct tools to do the job. As such, some effort can be put into choosing a suitable paint brush as it can save a lot of time and effort while painting.

Some properties which are important to look into when selecting paint brushes are:-

  • Is it the correct type of brush?

Synthetic, nylon brushes are better suited for water based emulsion paints, while natural bristle brushes are better suited for solvent based paints. Nylon may melt or harden when exposed to solvents, while natural bristle brushes will absorb water. This behavior will make the paint harder to apply, as the brush may be either too stiff, or too soggy.

  • Are the bristles firmly attached to the ferrule?

When you first buy the brush, check it by holding the bristles firmly in your hand and pulling on it. If the bristles are not firmly attached, you will find that some of them will come loose when you pull on it. This would cause problems during paint application as the poorly attached bristles will get stuck onto your freshly painted surface.

  • Is the brush head uniform in appearance?

Check the brush head to see if the bristles tapers to a point, and have a uniformly straight edge. The bristles should not flare outwards to form an opening (which resembles a fish mouth), as this means that the bristles are not properly positioned. This would cause uneven spreading of paint during application.

  • Are the brushes wide enough for your surface?

It is a good practice to work with a 1″ and a 2″ brush when painting. The thinner brush is used when painting near corners or narrow areas, while the wider brush is used for quickly applying paint onto the larger areas. Having at least two brushes would greatly speed up the work, as you don’t have to brush multiple times (for an undersized brush) or have to maneuver a large brush in a narrow space.

By keeping these 4 questions in mind when buying your brushes, it would help you choose the most suitable tool for the job at hand.

Floor Paint

by Boston Decorator in Painting

Colors play an important role in a structure either an office or a house. Just as floor paint does. When choosing for floor paints, it needs to meet specific requirements to the area to be painted to make it functional. There are three types of floor paints namely epoxy, oil, and latex.

If you will be painting your garage or kitchen and other areas with uneven humidity and prone to acidic elements, epoxy is the best recommended. Epoxy is the most durable type. It can last longer and can protect floors from sudden wear and tear. Furthermore it is also resistant to oil accumulation. It is advised that when applying epoxy paint on your garage floor, clean and de-grease the area thoroughly to achieve best results of painting application. On the other hand, oil-based provide smooth and shiny finish and are best partnered with polyurethane for durability. It should be reminded that when applying urethane, it should be left dry for at least 48 hours before coating it with urethane.

Oil-based paints are best for indoor and outdoor surfaces made of concrete or wood. Meanwhile, latex paints are specially designed to provide decorative finish to indoor and outdoor home and industrial masonry. It can be applied to wood, concrete or prime metal surfaces. It is a quick dry with lesser odor. When purchasing for floor paints, be reminded of the following hints: select the type of surface that you want to paint on, the color of the paint, and the ventilation of the area to where paint will be applied. If unsure for the right paint to choose, ask for assistance or bring an expert in paint with you.

Painting Contractor Vs DIY

by Boston Decorator in Painting

First of all, if you are unsure whether or not you need to even hire a painting contractor to paint the outside of your home, interior rooms or office, consider the time and equipment involved in doing it yourself. It is not impossible to take on your own paint project. There are plenty of do-it-yourself guides available. However, when you consider the amount of time it will take and the rental or purchase of equipment, the cost of completing the project on your own can be sky-high.

Hiring a painting contractor makes economical sense because the company will employ several workers to complete the project. Doing it yourself could take you several weeks. With several professionals working on the task, it could be complete in a matter of days. The workers will get it right the first time and, unlike you, won’t have to take extra time learning certain techniques required for the project.

The professional painter will also have time saving equipment readily available to them. Renting things like paint sprayers and ladders can be expensive, as is purchasing one-time use items like brushes, brush extensions and drop cloths. The painters will be able to use their own equipment for the project and will factor in any one-time purchases, like masking tape, into your overall estimate. A professional painter can also save you money through discounts on the paint needed for your home or office.

If at all possible, use recommendations from friends, relatives or co-workers when hiring a painting contractor. If you don’t recommendations to draw from then you should approach your local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. They may have some painters that they recommend.

If you have no recommendations or referrals then find names of professional painters online or in the phone book. You will want to ask the painters for references of jobs they have done. They should be able to give you a couple of homes or businesses in your area that they have worked on. Contact the references and find out whether or not they were happy with the work of the painters. Ask to see the project.

If you like what you see and hear about a particular painter, go ahead and get an estimate from them. You should be able to get a free estimate that includes work, equipment and paint costs. At this point, you may need to be prepared to discuss different paint types with the painter. They may have information and recommendations to help you narrow down your choices and make the right decision for your home or business. They may also be able to let you know about some discounts available for certain paints.

So, the next time you have a paint project that needs completed, consider the time and money that you can save by hiring a professional, painting contractor.

Kitchen Wall Treatments Can Influence the Spatial Dynamics of the Room

by Boston Decorator in Painting

Kitchen wall treatment is really an essential choice influencing the spatial dynamics of the space. Light colors, tiny patterns and delicate textures in a very tiny kitchen room magnify the feel of kitchen space, whereas darkish colors, heavy routine and large textures might cause a stifling impression. A sizable area naturally lends itself to bolder kitchen wall treatments.

A vertical routine gives a sense of extra space overhead, although a horizontal pattern opens up the width. Continuing a sample from the walls towards the ceiling will normally decrease the ceiling. Materials such as wooden, mirrors, and laminates also can cover bumps or gouges within the kitchen wall floor. Like other kitchen finish components, a wall treatment has to face as much as heat, grease and scrubbing with its looks intact.

Here, with the sample of kitchen wall treatments:

1. Wallpaper
This tried and accurate wall covering will come inside an extensive selection of colors and styles, in some instances pre-pasted with adhesive for convenience. A coat of varnish will seal the paper against most off the results of kitchen put on. Vinyl wall overlaying comes in the form of paper impregnated with vinyl or polyvinyl chloride on a cloth backing. Vinyl items charge particularly large on sturdiness since they will be wiped or scrubbed clean.

2. Brick or Stone
These rough, porous, and frequently expensive components lend shade and a rustic texture to kitchen walls. They will be difficult to clean, even though they’re durable.

3. Paint
Maybe the humblest and certainly the least costly of kitchen wall treatments, paint can nonetheless produce a look of sophistication and elegance and provides a nearly unlimited option of shades. By making use of a variety of applicator, you are able to differentiate the effect of paint, stippling, stencil and blotting it on the kitchen wall. Because it’s easiest to help keep thoroughly clean, glossy or semi-gloss paint is far better suited to kitchen walls than a flat complete.

4. Fabric
A fabric wall covering can supply interesting textures and effects, but unless it really is sealed with vinyl to repel grease and moisture, fabric is not a practical option for the kitchen.

5. Ceramic Tile
Imported or domestic, hand-painted or stock, ceramic tile provides an existing vary of modern, standard or country effects. Tile is durable and straightforward to thoroughly clean though at times costly.

Painting Companies – Benefits to the Homeowner

by Boston Decorator in Painting

If you have been thinking of talking a big paint job on your own, make sure you consider the many benefits that painting companies give their clients.

Often, home owners are tempted to tackle a big paint job on their own to save a little money. While some simple tasks are easily accomplished by the average do it yourselfer, painting companies give their customers numerous benefits, outside of just having the job done. If you need to paint something in your home, consider hiring a professional painter.

Safety

You may not think that this job has many safety risks, but in fact it does. Climbing on a ladder, working with solvents, and even stirring up dust during the process can put your safety at risk. Professional contractors have training and experience in the job and can do it safely, protecting you from any potential danger.

In addition to physical safety, this job can put your health at risk. Lead-based paints, which are present in any building built and painted before 1978, create serious health risks when sanded or scraped as you get the room ready to be painted. Painting companies know how to handle this potential toxin safely, and you and your family are kept away from it during the process.

Time Saving

No matter how easy it is, this job is time consuming. Professionals save you your valuable time by taking care of the entire process for you, freeing you to pursue your moneymaking endeavors or spend time with your family.

Getting Ready

As a homeowner, you may not know how to properly prepare the service for the paint to adhere well. Professional contractors do. Proper preparation before you begin to paint means the difference between a job that sticks and one that flakes and chips easily. Hiring a professional ensures that the area is properly prepared before the paint is applied.

In addition, professional contractors know how to prep the non-painted surfaces carefully. Taping off windows, draping floors, and protecting furniture is all much better handled by a professional contractor than a homeowner. Hiring a contractor ensures that your belongings and windows are protected during the process.

Cleanup

Do you know what you should do with a can of paint that you are done with? You cannot throw it in the trash because of the environmental impact it could have. It is considered a hazardous waste and must be disposed of properly. If you have ever done a paint job in your home, you likely still have the can floating around somewhere because you didn’t know what to do with it. Painting companies have disposal processes in place and know exactly what to do with any residual paint or leftover cans. You will not have to worry about them when the job is done, because your contractor will take care of it.

Considerations for Hiring

When you are ready to look into painting companies in your area, make sure you choose carefully. Choose a company with licensed, insured contractor, and ask for a written contract. These measures ensure you will be happy with the job and that you will not face any unwanted surprises during the process.

Ceiling Paint Idea – Painting Walls and Ceilings With a Contrasting Color Adds Interest to Your Room

by Boston Decorator in Painting

Don’t forget to look up. Are your ceilings all they could be? Or are they boring and drab and uninspiring? Ceilings can be the unsung heroes in your design scheme. Most people simply leave them white and think that is good. Why not shake it up and make them a distinctive part of your design?

One of the places I love to do something inspiring is in kids rooms. The sky is the limit, and I often put the sky in a child’s room. Of course you add some stars and moons or planets that glow in the dark. Or paint birds or butterflies or angels or something around the fan or light fixture. A really easy and fun thing to do is to use the removable wall graphics, or use stencils around the light or in various places on the ceiling.

Before we get carried away, words of caution don’t go overboard…less is more! Too much of a good thing can ruin the entire effect. Remember moderation when working with ceilings.

The use of crown moldings gives a more complete, more expensive feeling in a room. We often see crown moldings the wide boards that are difficult to work with; you can use many other options. I was in Bermuda for a vacation there they use one 1×4 flat boards against the wall at the ceiling and another 1×4 on the ceiling where the wall and the ceiling come together.

A great look and extremely easy to put up, the corners on the ceiling were simply a miter cut and the board on the wall a straight cut butted together. They looked very nice. It sets up a wonderful way to add an accent color to the ceiling inside the border created by the moldings. When you use a lighter accent color it brings up the feeling of the ceiling. A dark one brings it down.

A ceiling medallion is also an easy and very effective way to give your room a little boost. You can buy them in many sizes and shapes or paint them on or use stencils or again use the removable wall graphics. Typically a medallion is a three dimensional item attached to the ceiling, but you can replicate that look with paint.

The big bang look, (I only use this in small areas like bathrooms) is to paint the ceiling with metallic paint gold, silver, or bronze. You can also use leaf gold, it comes in 4×4 sheets and can be applied fairly easy, you still have to work above you head or quite awhile. The effect is very striking. Don’t let those ceiling go it is a completely new canvas to play with.

Easy DIY Decorating – Repairing Peeling Paint Spots

by Boston Decorator in Painting

How to Repair Peeling Paint in 4 Easy Steps

Step 1. Find The Moisture

Before you tackle the problematic area it is essential that you first identify the source of the moisture. The usual suspects are leaky pipes, gutters and overhangs – once you have found what is causing the moisture problem you will need to repair or alter it so that the area is able to dry out. When the peeling area has had a few days to dry you will be ready to move on to step two of the redecorating.

Step 2. Remove the Paint and Treat the Area

Step two deals with removing the peeling paint and cleaning up the area ready for repainting. Using a suitable tool, such as a flat edge scraper, you will need to completely remove all paint around the affected area. To be on the safe side it is recommend by professional painters and decorators that you remove paint as much as 30cm or 12 inches away from the peeling area. You may need to use sandpaper or solvents after scraping to ensure that there is absolutely no paint remaining.

If you have used solvents then you should let the surface dry completely. If you are painting onto wood then it is now time to move to step three, if not then you can skip right to the final stage!

Step 3. Seal The Wood

To prevent a return of the problem it is best practice to seal the wood with a sealer, this can be found at your local painting and decorating store. Apply the sealer to the affected area as per the instructions on the tin. Most sealers require 4-6 hours drying time at a minimum, overnight is usually best. Sealers work by preventing the wood from absorbing any more moisture, which would cause yet more peeling.

Step 4. Repaint The Area

Once you have completed all the applicable steps then you are ready to repaint the area. For the best finish it is recommended that you repaint the entire area, however if you are skilled at blending paints then you may be able to paint only the affected area. If you are painting the exterior wall of your house than please ensure you are using exterior paints – interior paint simply isn’t hard wearing enough to endure the outdoor life.

Peeling paint can often indicate an underlying moisture problem and it is essential that this is rectified prior to any restoration project. If in doubt, contact a professional painter decorator for advice and assistance.

Use an Airless Spray Gun for Perfect Craftsmanship

by Boston Decorator in Painting

The most common paint sprayer available these days is the Airless spray gun. It is not only used for commercial purposes but also used for residential purposes. They are really fantastic because within no time you can paint large areas and they require less time in comparison to other air models available. This airless spray equipment is top in the line because of their functionality, performance and quality of service offered by them.

There are various types of models available for every purpose. There are different models, for instance to offer a finishing touch of paint, there are a special kind of spray equipment available which is known as touch up sprayer. So, today rather than using any compressed air sprayer you should use Airless sprayer that works with the help of piston pump that pushes the paint outside through the tube and they offer really thicker coat that can’t be offered by any other compressed air spraying guns available. The best part of this spray gun is that you don’t have to worry about over spraying because of the controlled mechanism.

Mainly Airless spray guns possess 4 important parts. First one is the pump and there are two types of pumps available, which are diaphragm and piston. The functions of both the pumps are same, but each of them is designed with different methods to offer essential pressure while spraying. Second is the high pressure hose, it is the part that is utilized to tolerate the pressure that is produced by the pump. This sprayer comes with several grip designs and the third part is the grip style mainly they are available with two to four models. Fourth part is the tip, this part of the sprayer control the flow of paint on surface and they are available in various sizes.

Wendy writes articles on various topics ranging from hobbies to business practices. Some of my recent articles are about an airless spray gun and a texture spray gun.

How Can Paint Be Applied?

by Boston Decorator in Painting

Painting is a job usually done by professionals. They know the brands, the necessary tools, the necessary time to paint and dry the walls of a room or the painted surface. But if you have the time, the patience and a little talent you might have a lot of fun painting yourself. These are the main steps to be taken when you start decorating on your own.

The walls or the exterior of the object need to be prepared for the application of the paint. You must make sure that the surface is clean, dry and relatively free from all foreign substances like dust, grease, wax or others. That is why the surface must be washed thoroughly. Sandpaper could be a real help when you encounter rust or other difficult to remove impurity. After having successfully completed this step you should do some research on the best methods of applying paint. There are different tools which will help you finish the work, according to the surface you are painting or the type of paint you want to use.

There are two tools usually used for painting. The first one is the brush. It is very widely used because it comes in different sizes and qualities. It can cover any kind of surface and successfully applies almost all types of paint. But remember that cheap brushes might lose their bristles and thus interfere with the quality of your painting.

Paint can be applied with rollers when it comes to walls and ceilings. They are very popular because some of them have extension handles and even built-in reservoirs to reload paint. They can be used with both water based paint and with oil based paint, but it takes time to master the technique of using them.

Besides these traditional tools there are some tools which might seem more fun and appealing to you. Spray guns are very efficient when painting outdoor surfaces. They are more expensive than the other tools, but when used correctly they apply an even layer of paint on the surface. When using them it is very important to protect your face with a mask and goggles. Another funny tool is the aerosol can. It is a pressurized container which forces paint onto the surface through a fine spray jet. It comes very handy when the surface is small and highly textured.

With these tools and with some advice from professionals you will be able to paint whichever surface you want. Choosing the paint is another thing to do, but that is a totally different story.
