How to Avoid Mistakes When Updating Your Kitchen Decor

by Boston Decorator in Home Improvement, Kitchen Remodeling

Updating your kitchen’s design can give it a fresh, new and appealing look that is important, especially if you plan on selling your home. If the redesign isn’t planned out well it can cause problems and cost you a lot of money. The tips offered in this article will assist you in renovating your kitchen in the right way so that you don’t overspend and create obstacles for yourself.

Realize that if you don’t have too much money that you shouldn’t think about adding new appliances, cabinets and counter tops to your kitchen. Keep things simple as making all of these changes can cost a fortune, so be careful if you don’t have the budget for it. The look and feel of your kitchen can change drastically with some small and affordable changes.

Don’t be impulsive

If you don’t know what kind of theme you want yet, don’t simply buy the first thing that catches your eye. Take a notebook with you and make notes of the many accessories, kitchenware and other gadgets you like. If a new faucet is on your list, or you want appliances or other items that are a bit expensive you should comparison shop for the best price before making a purchase.

Choose a style that “fits” with the rest of your home

When renovating or refreshing the kitchen, you also want to make sure that what you choose in terms of style doesn’t conflict with the rest of the home. While it’s okay for you to blend styles like the western and country styles, trying to mix something like cottage chic and modern really doesn’t make much sense.

If your kitchen and living room are open to each other the best thing to do is use colors and style that will blend well together, in other words, colors and styles that are similar.

Remember – all those little extras add up

It can be easy to overspend before you realize it, especially if on a tight budget. You’ll find that you might have spent too much money on kitchen gadgets and decorative accessories, especially if they’ve been bought separately. Though you may think that the cost is reasonable if you buy one or two at a time, checking the added total may surprise you in terms of how much you’ve spent.

Prepare before updating the kitchen, even if you can afford the more expensive items like new cabinets.. Figure out your color scheme and make notes as you go shopping around first. Think about your storage needs so that you aren’t at all surprised when you install your new cabinets. Also, if you plan on getting new beautiful counter tops or a new tile floor make sure that you account for the installation fees.

If these tips and ideas are implemented you’ll be able to keep away some stress and keep more money while updating your kitchen. By creating a plan of attack you’ll be able to ensure that overspending doesn’t occur, and you’ll be able create a kitchen that is more beautiful and coordinated when you’ve completed the job. Since your kitchen gets a lot of traffic you should make sure that you not only keep it beautiful, but that you keep it warm and welcoming as well.

How to Choose the Right Window Treatment

by Boston Decorator in Home Improvement, Windows

Your windows are an essential part of your home. Thus, you want them to look beautiful. Windows are wonderful in letting light stream into your home; however, sometimes, you still want your privacy. Choose window coverings or treatments that blend well with your décor. This way, all your rooms will look appealing and pulled together. If you’re wondering about your window treatment options and what you can expect from them, read on.

Of course, if your home is far away from roads or other residences, you may be able to get away with practically anything you like, even no window coverings at all. Most homes, however, are located in places where there’s a need for some privacy. With the help of the following tips, you can decide what’s best for your home.

Shade Options
You have a choice of many different shade options that provide privacy or light. With fabric or roller shades, you will get complete coverage so that anyone from outside cannot see in—even at night when you have lights on inside your home. If you’re looking for security with full glass coverage, a great option is a pleated or cellular shade in a non-sheer material. You can find some that allow you to pull the top section down. This allows you to have light or view outside when you choose to do so. There are also cellular shades available that have an insulating effect, saving you money on energy costs as well.

Sheer and Non-Sheer Curtains and Draperies
Curtains and draperies have long been popular favorites. Although beautiful, sheer curtains are easily seen through in the evening hours, therefore offering little in terms of privacy. If you prefer sheers but want to maintain your privacy, you always have the option of using shades underneath.

Other options include curtains and draperies that are opaque or lined When pulled together in the center, they will give you complete privacy at night. They can be easily drawn back during the daytime to let the light come in.

Shutters, Vinyl Blinds, and Wood Blinds
If you go with shutters, vinyl blinds, vertical/horizontal blinds, or wood blinds, they’re all going to offer you a good amount of privacy. Mini-blinds are extremely popular and also present a relatively affordable option. Just remember that nearly all shutters and blinds have slats that have the potential to offer a view inside from certain angles. Overall, however, these window treatments offer a good deal of privacy.

Colors and Patterns
No matter what option you settle on, you’ll be able to find colors and patterns that complement your home’s décor and provide beautiful accents for all your windows. Curtains and draperies, for instance, come not only in solid colors but in every type of design imaginable. The possibilities are virtually endless—anything from florals, to stripes, to abstracts. If your home is decorating in a country style, wood shutters offer the perfect accent. You can open or close them to whatever degree you desire. Use blinds in conjunction with curtains or drapes, or use them alone. You might even simply add a valance or topper.

If you want to decorate your windows while maintaining the degree of privacy you like, you have plenty of choices. You don’t have to sacrifice beauty and style in order to keep your home safe from the peering eyes of the outside world. Throw in a little creativity, and make your home your own.

Winter Decoration Tips

by Boston Decorator in Home Improvement, Interior Decorating

There are many homeowners who like to change the dcor and decorate their home according to the different seasons. When it comes to winter decorating, there are many creative ideas you can try. Many people use the wintertime to decorate for the holidays, but there are also plenty of ways to decorate simply for the winter season. Here are some great tips to help get you started on your winter dcor.

Decorate Your Home in Winter White
When wintertime hits, turn your home into a winter wonderland by bringing out your white dcor items. Since winter days and nights tend to be dark and dreary, white dcor items can also work to add some much needed light to your home. They also bring the outside into your home, reminding one of beautiful snowfalls and winter delights. Its simple to add more white to your home in the winter. Just add white tablecloths, candles, and throws to your dcor.

Hang a Winter Wreath in Your Home
Wreaths are not just for Christmas and actually make a great winter decoration that you can display from December to March. Whether you make your own greenery wreath or buy a pre-made one, be sure it matches the style of your home. Pinecones, white or flannel ribbon, silver charms, and other items associated with winter can be used to decorate the wreath. You can then display the wreath on a wall. Make sure you hang the wreath on an appropriately sized wall, as you dont want a huge wreath on a tiny wall, nor do you want a tiny wreath on a huge wall.

Change Your Furniture for Winter
Changing your furniture for a winter dcor doesnt necessarily mean you have to go out and buy a new set of furniture for every season. You just might have to add or take away some items. Adding slipcovers can be a great way to change up your furniture for the winter. Heavier-material slipcovers in a wintery color will look great on your couches and chairs. In addition, you can add winter-themed pillows to the dcor. Those that are solid-colored or plaid make great wintery pillows, or try to find some with snowflake or snowman pictures on them. You might also add some winter style to the room by draping a heavy throw on the back of the couch or chair.

Change Your Artwork in Your Home for Winter
If you are trying to create a winter dcor, you may not want pictures of bright flowers hanging on your walls. If you have pictures like these, you can easily store them away for the spring and summer, and hang different pieces of art that lend more of a wintry feel to the dcor. Try black and white photographs of nature such as snow, trees, rivers, and mountains, for a perfect winter look. Or replace those bright and cheery flowers with painting that use more winter-like rich colors or a hand-painted picture of a country snowfall.

These are just a few of the many different ways you can create a winter dcor in your home. Its fun to change the look of your home to celebrate the different seasons of the year.

How to Decorate Your Bathroom

by Boston Decorator in Bathrooms, Home Improvement

Is your bathroom so cramped that it feels as if you can’t turn around? You can do several things to make the room look larger and feel less cramped. With the help of this article you can learn some neat tips that will help you turn your small bathroom into one that you can enjoy.

Color, lighting and a few other tricks can change your room without the need for making it larger. Whether you want your room to look elegant or inviting, the look you want can be accomplished with very little changes.

Pale Colors Open Up a Room
This does not mean that your room has to be painted in a plain white, it just means that a lighter color pallet can make a room look spacious. If you have a dark colored floor you may have to consider making it lighter. Walls should be painted soft shades of peach, cream or any other light color. Smaller accents such as towel holders, and artwork for the walls, may have bolder colors. Lighter colors on the top of your vanity, as well as the doors underneath, are preferable. Not much paint is necessary for achieving this with wooden cabinet doors. If towels are used as décor, light shades that compliment the room should be chosen.

Bring More Light In
An area can be opened up and brightened visually by adding light to it. Wall sconces can be considered for additional sources of lighting in a bath, so can recessed lighting in the ceiling or a small lamp for the vanity. A skylight with help brighten up the room with natural light if it is within your budget.

If It Takes Up Space, Take It Out!
It is common for people to have extra shelves in their bathrooms for holding towels, cotton balls and other vanity items. It is easy to detract from a spacious and open look with object that protrude into the room. A linen closet and your vanity can easily be used to store items; removing the need for shelving and other storage units. Removing clutter, to find that the room looks larger, will amaze you.

Expand With Mirrors
It has been known for a long time that mirrors reflect light, and this will help any room appear larger. Replacing the mirror over your vanity with a larger one in your bathroom is always a good idea as it will reflect the color and design of the area. Using an over-sized mirror works perfectly, but if you prefer to use several mirrors arranged artistically to add interest and reflect light you may. And, if space allows you may use another mirror on a separate to expand the boundaries of the room.

Clutter always looks messy and, no matter the room, will visually diminish the area. The same holds true for your bathroom. A cleaner, more streamlined look will be accomplished by eliminating clutter. You should remove clutter on the vanity by storing away smaller items such as toothpaste, lotions, and deodorant in order to free up space. Putting these tips to work means that your bathroom with look larger than ever before!

Art Display In Your Home

by Boston Decorator in Home Improvement, Interior Decorating

If youre looking for a way to display your favorite piece of art in your home, then you have a couple of options to choose from. Rather than settling with simply hanging your piece of art on the wall, choose from one of these creative ways to display art in your home instead.

Use Ribbon to Hang Art on the Wall
You can go beyond simply hanging a piece of art from a nail in the wall by using ribbon to hang the art instead. Not only will the ribbon add to the art, but it should complement it as well.

You can do this by placing a hook or a screw on the back of the art piece and hanging ribbon either in the middle of the piece or from both sides. Then place a hook on the wall or use a small nail to hang the ribbon from. Just be sure that the piece of art is hanging evenly, particularly if youre using more than one ribbon to hang it by.

Place Artwork on a Decorative Shelf
A decorative shelf makes a great place to display art in your home. You should be able to find all different types of decorative shelves and ledges that will add to the beauty of the piece of art you want to display.

You want to be sure that the shelf you choose is the appropriate size for the piece you are going to display. You might also decide to display an entire collection of art on the shelf, rather than just one piece. Before placing any artwork on your shelf or ledge, its important to be sure that its properly installed on the wall.

Use a Fireplace Mantel to Display Art
A nice fireplace mantel makes a great display area for your art, which will also work to draw more attention to the mantel itself. Rather than going the traditional route of hanging the artwork above the mantel, try placing the piece on the mantel and up against the wall instead.

The artwork should be smaller than the mantel. However, you dont want it too small so that you cant really see the art. If necessary, place two or three smaller pieces of art on the mantel, rather than just sticking with one small one. Do be sure to secure the piece of art so it wont fall down off the mantel.

Find Unique Hangers for the Art
Artwork can be hung on the wall using several different things that youve probably never even thought to use. For instance, if you have a favorite stocking holder, you can nail it to the wall and use it to hold your favorite piece of art instead.

A rope or chain that hangs from the ceiling or the top of the wall makes another unique artwork holder. Hang one piece or several pieces from it, either vertically or horizontally, depending on the length of the wall. You can actually create something like a clothesline, hanging your pieces of art across a blank wall.

There are so many unique ways to display pieces of art in your home that you dont have to settle for the same old traditional options. There are plenty of creative and crafty ways to display art in a room, no matter your style or theme. By getting creative, you can implement one of these ideas to display art in your home in an entirely new way.

Decorating Your Home in a Contemporary Style

by Boston Decorator in Home Improvement

Many people have different styles, however some love to keep things current in style and design. If you are one of those people you might just love the décor of the contemporary style. Several years ago the contemporary style was cold and unwelcoming; however, this style feels nothing like that. The contemporary style of today is comfortable and doesn’t feel dark and unwelcoming.

So, what is needed for contemporary style? The major aspects of this style of design are simplicity, clean lines and sophistication. The contemporary look will fit in just about any room if it’s sleek and fresh. This can be easily accomplished by focusing on shape, size and color when decorating the house. This article will provide you with other important features of contemporary design that will help you decorate your room.

Contemporary Color Choices for Your Room
Neutral colors are often used in the contemporary style, though  the incorporation of blues and greens is becoming more popular in the design. The base for the contemporary style is usually black which also grounds the look. Neutral shades and tones such as light grey, white and tan need to be used on the walls.

The contemporary look is beginning to spawn monochromatic themes. Monochromatic themes are basically the use of two complimentary colors with the occasional small addition of a neutral color such as black or white. This means that you will be able to use a light blue chair in conjunction with white pillows.

Accentuate the Lines and Geometry of the Room
The contemporary style must be complimented with distinct lines. A perfect example of distinct lines can be found in geometric shapes and bare windows. Don’t mix everything together, all your pieces need to stand out on their own so don’t clutter your spaces.

Choosing Sleek and Modern Furniture
Furniture that looks sleek and modern and has geometric patterns is perfect in a contemporary setting. A sleek warp around sofa with exposed legs fits perfectly in the contemporary style, while something like a plush sofa doesn’t. You should keep an eye out for furniture that is in neutral tones like white, black, tan and grey. Avoid anything will frills, skirts or trims on the bottom; this includes any furniture or accents.

Contemporary Décor is Basic, Bold, and Functional
Remember, less is more in the contemporary style. All this means is that you need to focus on larger objects and avoid small and cute things. Floral or paisley prints as well as fringes and ruffles should be avoided.

When it comes to contemporary design the décor should be basic, bold and functional. The décor for the table and shelves area might only need to be a simple candle on a dish. Marbles or colored balls in a glass vase is a contemporary piece that you can also use. Try not to use more than one item per surface area, and some areas such as side tables might not even need anything on them.

Take into consideration the fact that it’s hard to use  contemporary pieces in other styles of décor, but if it is something you really want it is a great style that will look beautiful in any room of the house.
